DREAMS AND VISIONS (SUONI E VISIONI)
Following closely on the heels of ROUTE 1, released just a few months ago, ROUTE 2 follows up on the previous album with a collection of ten compositions that display all the flair and clarity of an artist who, after earning a reputation in the visual arts, has returned to music by making the most of his youthful studies at the piano. Each track is a story in itself, with a specific identity and character: From breakbeats in the style of Mille Plateaux (Victor) to concrete music transfigured in loops (Campari Sekt), from a madrigal that disintegrates into a kaleidoscope of reverberations (Barbate) to monochord electronics with a post-industrial matrix (Fällst mir leicht), from the delicate pointillism of Darwin to the sirens that sound the alarm and spread panic in Drohnt, from the rigorous phonetic experiments in Dich to the ethereal effervescence of Cadiz. Inspired and visually charged sound, as if Schappert no longer distinguishes between canvas and pentagram and everything merges into a homogeneous language.

ROLAND SCHAPPERT - ROUTE 2(2LP by R-ecords)
Earlier this year, Roland Schappert released ROUTE 1, which I didn't hear. Now there is the follow-up, ROUTE 2, which makes sense as a title, I guess. While there is lengthy information on what exactly is a bit of a riddle for me, there is hardly any information about the man himself. He also had a tape on the Tapesports label. Much of what he does with music has to do with loops. I believe he works digitally, like good ol' fashioned sampling and plays around with these in various ways. Schappert uses field recordings next to purely electronic sounds, acoustic objects, everyday objects or, one short piece, his voice. In the first few pieces, the looping isn't as apparent as they are later on, with pieces such as 'Darwin' and 'Drohnt' dealing with more extended tones and drones and field recordings of water, bells, and birds. From 'I Love You, ich', the sound gears towards a more electronic sound, sequenced sounds, shorter loops and such. A melodic aspect is not lost on the music, even when, at times, Schappert has a rather loose touch when it comes to playing these. Sometimes a more dance-oriented beat comes into play, such as in 'Victor' (although the melodic aspect destroys the dance element) and the marching orders of 'Fällst mir leicht'. The album is, stylistically, in many places, but it has a coherent feeling. You get the drift of it all, I guess. The music might sometimes be abstract, yet it doesn't feel all too abstract or strange. Schappert sets out to entertain the listener with some surprising rhythm music, using, at times, weird sounds but keeps an eye on the ball of keeping it all accessible. The result is a lovely double album. (FdW)

Roland Schappert - Bad Alchemy #117 preview
ROLAND SCHAPPERT Route 2 (R-ecords, 2xLP): The trip of the Cologne art, art book and sound art maker following on from "Route 1" (BA 114) joins with 'Darwin' those who, although descended from roaring or other apes, evolved bell-playing, with an ear for birds, children, surf. In 'Drohnt' drones and threats thunder and sound a booming alarm, UFOs flutter like discus disks, hurled towards earth by a universal polyphemus - the geese of the Capitol cackle, a poor-sinner's bell chimes to twittering pixels. Children play and the sea also licks its lips again. 'I love you, Ich' casts doodly waves, dark keysounds scurry around monotonously throbbing bass, hooking as a locked groove, a brass douche claiming I love you - an uptempo 'coda' eia-eia-hurries after. On 'Victor' it goes dudelig on, jumpy keys interact with clacky loop, cascading pixels, moaning sounds. With fast stomp follows 'Fällst mir leicht', half Hayfoot, Strawfoot, half Stomp, with doubled beat, suddenly quarrying synthi, and again DadaDada, TamTam. 'Dich' stutters and d-ich, I love you-ich. On 'Barbate' a wiry twang, half guitar, half harpsichord, circles to grumpily repeating, hobblingly rough tracks. 'Cádiz' brings back dudely cascading vibes, in stave-playing laconism, with sporadic buzzing impulses piling up. In 'Campari Sekt', ice cubes circle clattering in the glass, to a galloping Balimbalim loop that shifts from light to dark, also phase-shifting vainly changing its rhythm and the volume to metal barrel format. Well then, cheers. [BA 117 rbd]
